NEW PROSPECT CEMETERY ASSOCIATION
New Prospect Cemetery was originally called Powell Cemetery by early settlers of Callaway County as well as by more-recent friends and neighbors. Prospect Methodist Church stood on south end of today's cemetery for 77 years (1826-1903), then the Church moved into New Bloomfield to become the N.B. United Methodist Church (UMC) located there today.
Prospect Cemetery still receives burials. But after 1903 its neglected monuments and grounds gradually deteriorated. In 1994 volunteers formed New Prospect Cemetery Association, their initial mission being to restore as much as possible the cemetery's older monuments and grounds. This they did, over several hard-labor years of donated labor and materials. Today's NPCA strives mostly just to maintain this historic UMC-abandoned cemetery in its restored condition.
New Prospect Cemetery now has well over 200 graves, including many New Bloomfield area settlers with surnames such as: Powell, Gray, Clatterbuck, Phillips, Kelsay, Hall, Holt, Kyger, McKim, Miller, Wilson, White, Reynolds, Brooks, Boren and a dozen more area-pioneer surnames. Among our newest residents are Donald Doty Jr, a 'Nam veteran buried here September 2, 2009 and Virginia Spencer, February 2010. Our oldest resident (Lucy Holt Reynolds) was born July 4, 1776 (USA's Independence Day). Here's a pic of her restored monument:
New Prospect Cemetery Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation registered (fees paid annually) with the State of Missouri. We are also a registered (fees-paid) cemetery in Callaway County records. Your donations to our association are fully tax-deductible, every penny going to cemetery maintenance costs. Cemetery management is cost-free...done by NPCA volunteers (who also do minor-labor needs: fence-mendings, tree-trimmings, new-graves landscaping/seeding). Summertime's dozen-or-more grass-mowings and winter's occasional ice-storm damage to our trees are two examples of major expenses that we must contract out, being unable physically to do extensive hard-labor tasks ourselves anymore.

Our cemetery gate's metal sign still indicates to send donations to our longtime Treasurer/chief-caretaker Roy Carrington, who recently went to Heaven. We choose to leave that sign hanging near our gate...the same gate Roy had installed and donated to us in 1995...in honor and memory of Roy's many years of freely-donated time and work to help restore our cemetery. But please now send your future donations to NPCA's new treasurer (Roy's son, Lynn!) at the above address.
